Summer is approaching, which means it’s time to start thinking about summer travel. Gas prices continue to increase and that can add stress to an otherwise relaxing getaway.

Fortunately, there are easy ways to save on gas this summer. Farm Bureau Financial Services offers these simple money-saving tips to ensure smooth sailing (even if you’re not headed to the beach).

1. Save on gas by clicking on the cruise: Cruise control can improve gas mileage and boost efficient driving, as well as ensure you’re following the speed limit. To conserve gas on the highway, consider this tip from the Environmental Protection Agency: every five mph a person drives above 60 mph is like paying $0.24 more per gallon of gas. If you drive 70 mph and have a 15-gallon gas tank, that’s an extra $7.20 per fill-up. If you fill up once per week throughout the three months of summer, that’s $86.40!

2. Gauge tire pressure: Fuel efficiency increases when tires are inflated to the proper tire pressure. Keep a gauge handy, and check every month or two to ensure you’re getting the best fuel efficiency.

3. Keep it smooth: Aggressive driving affects fuel efficiency. Avoid “jerky” driving, keep stops to a minimum, and avoid bumps and potholes. Brake gradually when possible, as careful, smooth driving can help lower gas mileage by 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent in town.

4. Consider alternative transportation: Consider renting a more fuel-efficient car for summer vacation travel, or consider mass transit like a train or bus. Research your destination to see whether you can rent bikes to go exploring. You’ll save on gas and see your destination in a totally different way. Try to book your hotel accommodations near the attractions you’d like to see, so that you can walk or bike.

5. Lighten the load: While you might need to carry luggage for a road trip, try to keep the load as light as possible. According to the EPA, an extra 100 pounds can decrease fuel efficiency by up to 2 percent.
