As we head into the winter months, driving can pose a challenge when bad weather strikes. Snow, sleet, fog and high winds are conditions many drivers will face during the next few months. There are actions you can take to help minimize some threats. Keep these tips in mind when you’re on the road:
• Give yourself enough time to arrive at your destination. Dangerous conditions and accidents often cause delays.
• Bring a cell phone in case you are running late or for emergencies. However, avoid the temptation to use your phone while driving.
• Drive slowly. Accelerating, stopping and turning all take longer on snow-covered roads.
• Leave more distance than usual between your vehicle and the car you’re following. Give yourself at least 10 seconds to stop.
• Be careful when driving over bridges and roadways rarely exposed to sunlight. These areas may be icy when other areas are not.
• Avoid sudden stops and quick direction changes.
• Keep your gas tank full. Bad weather can cause detours and delays. Besides, fuller gas tanks aren’t likely to freeze your car’s gas line.
• Keep your windshield and windows clear. Drivers in cold-weather states should have a snow brush and scraper in their vehicle at all times.
• Don’t use cruise control when driving on slippery surfaces.
• Warm up your vehicle outdoors or with the garage door open.
• Keep your tires properly inflated and rotated as needed.
• Check your exhaust pipe to make sure it is clear. A blocked pipe could cause a leakage of carbon monoxide gas into your car when the vehicle’s engine is running.
• Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle that includes a blanket, flashlight, water and non-perishable snacks.
• Monitor the weather conditions at your destination before beginning your trip. Stay home if conditions are unfavorable.
By following these tips, you and your family can have a safe winter driving season.
